Reflection on the year
Throughout the year I tried to participate in nearly all opportunities given to us. I learned lots of new skills and I feel I achieved all of my objectives for the year. I think this year has been a great benefit for me as I gained more confidence in myself, I have a better idea of what I want to do after school and I’ve developed my CV further.
In relation to my aims and objectives of the year I feel I have achieved my aims to the best of my ability.
My first aim for this year was to improve my English as it has been one of weakest subject since 1st year, I had so much spare time this year in the evening it gave me an opportunity to read books that I liked. I have decided that I'm going to read the whole series of the game of thrones books, I am currently on the 3rd book. You need to be a reader to achieve at English.
My second aim for the year was to start going to the gym. This year without having homework I was able to complete a few gym programs in our club. These programs have helped me excel in my hurling capabilities. Healthy body healthy mind.
My third aim for this year was to enter the BT Young Scientist. I submitted a project on the application of putting a sensor into a sliotar to count how many steps a player takes with the ball in his hand. My proposal is on my portfolio. We ended up qualifying for The exhibition up in Dublin. We sadly ended up having to pull out as were unable to make the sliotars as we dint have efficient resources or money to achieve the goal. In the future I would hope to resume working on this project as it may be very profitable product to produce.
My forth aim was to overcome my fear of public speaking, Our variety show helped achieve this goal for me . In the scene Many Young men of Twenty, I had a lead role in this acting scene. I had to stand up in front of everyone and talk like an old Irish farmer. Other things like class announcements and even training second years helped me achieve this goal also. We also had a workshop on public speaking with Alan Devine, he told us we should bring energy and attitude to any speeches. I now no longer fear the daunting task of standing up in front of people and talking to a crowd.
My fifth and last aim was to try out new subjects, This year I got to try out Home Ec., Art and EU studies. Home Ec was fun because we got to make fresh food every Tuesday morning which was delicious. Art was very relaxing and somber. EU studies was interesting because we got to learn about thing from different countries. Sadly I don't think I will be taking these subjects any further.
Throughout the year we went on various trips and did plenty of workshops. My favorite workshop was the public speaking with Alan Devine as I feel I got the most out of this workshop. My favorite trip was to Barcelona because it was a once in a lifetime opportunity. Over all I think that this year benefited me greatly and I hope it befits me later in life. If anyone is thinking of doing TY in Portumna I would highly recommend it, It's an incredible experience.
